Jan de Beer
Jan de Beer
c 1475-1528
The beginning and end of this Dutch painter's life went by undocumented. The limited records reveal that in 1490 he registered in the Antwerp Guild of St Luke where he later became an alderman and then dean, and in 1504 he became a master. There is only one painting fully signed by De Beer, but about two dozen more religious works are believed to be his. He is considered to be the most talented of the Antwerp Mannerists, a group of artists working in Antwerp from c1500-1530, producing flamboyant pieces en masse for the local and foreign market.
