Giuseppe Castiglione(16881766) fue un misionero italiano, arquitecto y artista que se fue a China durante la dinastía Qing (1644-1911).
Entró en la Compañía de Jesús en 1707 y llegó a Macao 8 años más tarde. Luego se fue a Pekin para ayudar en una tarea misionera. Actuó como artista imperial durante los reinados de tres emperadores: Kang Xi, Yong Zheng and Qian Long. Durante ese tiempo, poco a poco se adentró en el estilo del arte tradicional chino y realizó varias obras famosas.
Debido a su influencia, los artistas chinos escribieron el primer libro de escenografía de la pintura occidental. Además realizó varias pinturas al oleo para iglesias católicas.

Giuseppe Castiglione (1688-1766) was an Italian missionary, architect and artist, and came to China during the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911).
He joined the Society of Jesus in 1707 and arrived in Macao 8 years later. Soon he came to Beijing to assist the missionary work. He acted as the imperial artist in the reign of three emperors: Kang Xi, Yong Zheng and Qian Long. During that time, he gradually absorbed the style of Chinese traditional arts and finished several famous works.
Due to his influence, the Chinese artists wrote the first book on the scenography of western painting. Besides, he drew several oil paintings for the Catholic churches. In 1766, he died in Beijing.

Peintre de formation, volontaire pour la Chine, le jésuite milanais Giuseppe Castiglione arrive à Pékin en 1715, à 27 ans. Il ne rentrera jamais en Europe, mais servira, pendant plus de cinquante ans et sous le nom chinois de Lang Shining, trois empereurs successifs. Il mit au point, en tant que peintre, décorateur et architecte à leur Cour, un compromis original entre traditions chinois et européenne. Ce livre retrace, à partir des découvertes et des études récentes, le parcours et l´apport artistique de ce grand créateur de la Cour des empereurs mandchous.
