Born November 12, 1823 in Montpelier, VT. He often depicted African Americans and their development during the Civil War. He also painted a number of portraits of prominent men in NYC.
Studied with Chester Harding; in Dusseldorf, with Hans Gude; and in London.
Member: National Academy of Design, 1871 and was president from 1890-1900; American Watercolor Society and was president from 1878-1887; New York Etching Club (founder); Artists Aid Society (founder and president); among others.
More than 200 oils and watercolors are in the collection of the Wood Art Gallery in Montpelier, VT.
Died April 4, 1903 in NYC.
